Advent Calendar Project – Week 2

(Every week until December 1st we will be making a small Christmas ornament that can be used in our Pocket Advent Calendar. Join us in making all 24 or just pick and choose your favorites.)

Since so many of us are busy with Fourth of July holiday plans over the next week, I thought we’d keep this week’s ornament relatively simple. This ornament took me about an hour to make and most of that time was spent waiting for the glue to dry.

This wooden star reminds me of Scandinavian straw ornaments, but instead of straw it’s made of toothpicks. A little embroidery floss around each of the joints makes it look as if it was tied together and adds a pop of color. It has the clean, delicate lines you so often find in Scandinavian design. Now, I’m dreaming of a garland made of these little stars.

Wooden Star Ornament

You can make this star with or without the embroidery floss detail, it’s pretty either way.

Supplies:

  • square toothpicks (my box actually calls them square rounded)
  • tacky glue
  • cutting mat with inches marked (optional)
  • scissors
  • red embroidery floss

1. Place two toothpicks parallel from each other 1″ apart. Take two more toothpick and glue them on top of the first two creating a tic-tac-toe shape. You want the second two to also be 1″ apart from each other. Doing this on a mat with inches marked out really helps with the layout. Try to keep everything as straight as possible.

I used a toothpick to put the glue dab the glue on the other toothpicks and also clean away any extra. Make a second tic-tac-toe shape with four more toothpicks. Let dry completely.

2. Dab a little glue where each of the toothpicks meet then wrap with some embroidery floss. I wrapped the floss around three times. Cut any excess floss off at the back and glue down the ends.

3. Glue one toothpick square on top of the other as in the picture below.

Let dry.

4. Make a loop out of another piece of embroidery floss. Attach at one of the floss wrapped joins to create a hanger.

Now, you have a wooden star ornament all ready to hang or fill another pocket of your advent calendar.
