Iron Craft ’15 Challenge #19 – Stuffed Hedgehog (Attempt)

For this Iron Craft challenge we could revisit any of the past challenges from this year. I chose to do the last challenge, Wild Thing, again (though it would also fit in the State Fair challenge). Last week, I posted a tutorial for a hedgehog Christmas ornament. While I was working on how to make it I started batting around ideas for making a bigger stuffed hedgehog with the same fabrics. I haven’t done a lot of stuffed toy making, so doing something like this from scratch was a real challenge for me.

The results were not perfect, but it was a real learning experience for me. I think I got the shape of the face pretty good, but the large backing on the safety eyes distorted it a bit when stuffed, especially at the nose.

The body was a little too big and he really needs legs to hold the head up. (I have him standing on a glass case here.) A shorter fur might be a better fit as well.

I’m glad I spent a day working on this even if it didn’t come out perfect. It was fun to spend an afternoon challenging myself to learn new crafting skills.
