Project: Lights on Broadway Mittens

One of my biggest crafting supporters is Russ from NY Star Cards. He has been part of Iron Craft from the beginning and always cheers everyone along. He has been a fan of my mittens designs and I decided it was about time he had a pair designed for him. We discussed a few ideas for the design and came up with Broadway.

I created the mittens based on the lights and signs of the theater district. Russ works at the St. James Theater, so we included that in the design. I’ve also included a chart to change the St. James name to Broadway or you could put any theater or word you’d like. The design on the palms makes me think of New York checkered cabs.

For the first time, I’ve designed this pattern in both a men’s and women’s medium size. That was an interesting new challenge for me both in writing it up and in making this pattern fit on a smaller women’s mitten. I didn’t want to just have people change gauge to make it happen.

Russ, has a slightly shorter hand than an average men’s medium, so I adapted the pattern when I knit it up to fit him. You will notice the one in the pattern has a little more to the chart. It is easy to make this pattern short, just remove the number of rows need from the bottom of the hand section and also move the thumb down that number of rows.
