PPR Challenge 4 – Kat’s Design

This week the designers were given bow ties and asked to create a design using them as something other than a tie. For Project Project Runway we were allowed to use bow or regular ties. My husband very nicely donated a tie from his drawer to the cause (as a software engineer who works at home ties aren’t usually part of his wardrobe anyway). I chose this green and black tie because I liked the pattern in it.

I wanted to pattern to be the focal point, but was afraid if I made a whole look from it, it might be a little overpowering. Also I wanted to play with the fact that I was using a piece of menswear and create a sexy women’s look.

I certainly think this look is bringing the sexy. I used the tie to make a very high waisted, yet still short skirt. The heavy silk of the tie works great for this shape. Then I paired it with a very low cut, shawl collared, cap-sleeve blouse. I love the pleated fabric of the shawl collar against the very open neckline.

When it came time for styling, I knew I needed a statement necklace with that neckline. I chose one in a green to pair with the skirt (hopefully, it’s not too matchy-matchy). A chunky gold bracelet dresses up the bare arms. I put her in black tights/leggings and hoped to give her tall boots, but their aren’t any on the Belk accessory wall, so I went with black booties instead. It’ll still give her the long lean look I was going for.

So, what will the judges think? I hope just turning the tie into a skirt isn’t too boring. I was glad to show separates and I think the blouse is beautiful. I can totally see Heidi wearing it, as she likes to show a little skin. I think Nina would think it would photograph well since the collar frames the face. I’s like to think I was safe this week. (Though since I didn’t storm out and smash a camera, I’m for sure safe.)
