(For the 24 weeks leading up to December 1st, we’ll be making a Christmas ornament, giving you enough to fill an advent calendar.)
A few years back I collected a bunch of pinecones to use as Christmas decorations. I’d seen some done up as cute elves, so I thought I’d try my hand at it.
This is a super easy ornament and one you can have the kids help with. If you are a knitter, you could knit up a hat and scarf instead of using felt, though the felt is so easy!
Pinecone Elf
- pinecone with a flat bottom
- glitter paint (optional)
- paintbrush (if using glitter paint)
- 1″ wooden ball with flat side (or size appropriate to your pinecone)
- acrylic paint in black, red and pink
- very thin paint brush or toothpick
- red felt
- scissors
- red thread
- hand sewing needle
- strong glue, such as tacky glue
- jump ring
1. Paint the pinecone with glitter paint if you wish. I like a little sparkle on my ornaments and it makes the brown pinecone stand out a bit in the tree.
2. Paint a simple face on the wooden ball. I like to use a toothpick to do this.
3. Glue the wooden ball to the flat bottom of the pinecone.
An egg cup made a great stand for letting it dry.
4. Make a cone from the felt big enough to fit around the wooden ball for a hat. You can glue the cone together, but I prefer to hand sew it as I find the glue doesn’t seem to hold felt to itself easily. Sew the jump ring to the top of the hat for hanging.
Glue the hat on the wooden ball.
5. Cut a small strip of felt, mine was just under 1/2″ and about 4″ long. Use your scissors to fringe the edges. Glue around the neck of your elf.
(If you want to add elf ears, you can see how I did them on these Peg Doll Elves.)
