A friend of mine suggested a field trip to the Makery in Los Altos, CA,
It is the marriage of a high-end craft shop and a high-end fabric store with project areas thrown in to boot. There are finished pieces (like Etsy), kits for crafts (like a craft store), then there are raw materials, like a “felt bar”.
There is a very well edited room of fabric, like a boutique quilt shop.
There is just enough to spark your interest, and inspire greatness, but not enough to loose you.
Here are some of my favorite projects that I saw there:
The word “rustic” is overused, but I really feel like it applies here. I love the contrast between the sweet quilting fabrics, and the “tougher” burlap.
Here are these mini pirates, sitting in their mini baskets. These look like they would be FUN to try!
And a nail-yarn Northern California piece.
They sell kits for the blanket showing. And that is really sweet. But my eye was drawn to the huge scale bowl behind it. I asked about it, and it is made from “one box” of piping filler cord, similar to this at JoAnn’s and, I have to say I want to try that too!
Here is just part of the wool felt collection. (Swoon.) And a note, it is WOOL felt. Yumm.
There is some yarn and some needles (but not a lot, to be fair) . There are some books and there are some hand printed cards.
They also have the option of two different work spaces. One is some wonderful big industrial tables in a classroom setting. And the other is a courtyard space that looks and feels outdoors, but in reality, it is under a very high ceiling with lots of skylights. The back door of several business comes out on this courtyard and they have it decorated with AstroTurf and Adirondack chairs, as well as some tables and chairs for project work. The store is warm and inviting and colorful. It has been open for just over a year. I sure hope they are successful and continue to grow and prosper.
Happy craft shopping to you.
