This week’s challenge was in conjunction with Belk, a Southern department store that is sponsoring this year’s accessory wall. They wanted us to create a look for the modern Southern woman. We were told a Southern woman dresses vibrantly, expressively and with bright colors. Even though the challenge is called Let’s Do Brunch, we could create a day or evening look.
I had a bit of drama in the workroom. A family medical emergency kept me from getting to “Mood,” so I had to make due with what I already had. Luckily, I had this vibrant silk that I used in Challenge #2 Million Dollar Runway. The flowers also reminded me a bit of bouganvilla that you often see around the South.
I created a sleeveless, wrap-dress which I think is a perfect day look for the Southern weather. The dress has a v-neck that is not too sexy, but also not too demure. It is tied together with a coordinating sash. The hi/low hem of the dress really adds the modern touch. The back of it is also gathered slightly for just a little bubble effect. Not enough to make the butt look big, but enough for some interest.
For accessories I went with a pump in silvery gray that brings out the gray in the fabric. The v-neck called for a statement necklace. Finally, a great pair of sunglasses completes a perfect brunch look.
So, what would the judges think? You know I didn’t have super high hopes for this look because of my time constraints, but in the end I think it turned out really good. I think Heidi would love the hi/low skirt. The dress is a style that would look good on a lot of women, so The guy from Belk could easily see it selling. I would hope this look would put me in the top three or at least keep me safe.
