Challenge: Image is Everything
Challenge: Create an outfit for a member of the Canadian rock band The Sheepdogs.
Time Limit: You have 24 hours to finish this challenge.
If I thought the stilt walker challenge this year was the silliest I’ve seen on project runway to date, well this one might just have had the worst runway I’ve ever seen in all the seasons of the show.
After working on my own design I understand the problem the designers had, every time I tried to put what I considered a design element into my outfit it ended up looking too feminine or costume-like. It seemed like the designers on the show all had Jimmy Hendrix or Steven Tyler on the mind when they created their outfits. I looked to inspiration from Lenny Kravitz, a man who know how to pull from the past and still look modern.
I wanted my outfit to look good, but I also thought about the fact that it needed to be comfortable while preforming on stage. I went with a straight leg pant with a subtle stripe in shades of green and brown. I think stripped pants are really sexy as well as making the wearer look taller and thinner, plus they are a nod to the ’60’s. For the top I made a heavy, distressed t-shirt with a snug fit and a squared collar. To a little extra bit of style, I added a white scarf, something I can totally see Lenny wearing, but I worry makes my model look a little more like Austin Scarlett (especially with that hair).
For accessories, I added a black wrist band that I made and a pair of Steve Madden work boots from Piperlime. I also decided my model needed a tattoo despite his Bieber haircut.
So, how would the judges react? Hmmm…that’s tough because I don’t think there is a whole lot of “design” to my outfit this week. Really I just went with what I thought a real guy in a band would want to wear. I think Nina might like my pants and Heidi would appreciate the tight shirt.

That is GREAT. I cannot believe you gave him ink!
Your Austin Scarlet comment cracked me up. Not the ‘rocker’ vibe you were going for?
Looks better than anything I saw on the runway for this challenge! I wouldn’t object to a small scarf but maybe not white.
Hehe Austin Scarlet! That’s awesome. But I think your model pulls off the look like a true rocker. The tattoo is the best!
