Yesterday I had one of those great Saturdays when you’ve got no errands to run & nothing on the schedule which I haven’t had in quite awhile. The weather was gray and drizzly (San Francisco summer) so it seemed like a good day to try out my learn to quilt kit. It had all the supplies (less the cutting board & ruler) to make an Ohio Square block. 
Here’s my first pieces quarters. I can’t say this is fabric I would have picked myself but for practicing it was fine, I really had to be careful to get straight cuts because the gingham would really show if I was very crooked.
Here’s the finished block all sewing together. I had a bit of trouble with the binding because the directions weren’t exactly clear but all and all I’m happy with the final result. Now I’m practicing hand quilting on it & then I move on to the doll quilt I bought the Mode quilt kit for.

I’m a quilter and I give you an A+ You did a great job with the gingham! You’ll soon also learn a mitered binding. Can you imagine quitling long ago and cutting with only scissors??
One of my first blocks was an Ohio Star that I quilted in 1/4″ lines just for practice. I made it into a pillow top and when I finally found a quilting group, one woman looking at it from the next table asked if I’d used chenille for the background fabric. {g} I still cut all my quilt pieces by hand using double templates – one for the cutting line and one for the hand piecing line.

Looks good! I’d never have the patience to quilt with gingham… Can’t wait to see pics of the hand-quilting! : )
