Project: Lightning Fast Waterproof Picnic Blanket

For the end of the year BBQ and raffle at the school, we are each responsible for bringing something that corresponds to a theme. For our room, the theme is “sports” so our basket is all outdoor/sports things. I signed up to bring a “Picnic Blanket” and I was excited to make a version of one I had seen online.

The water proof side is actually a table cloth. The other side is fabric and both are available at JoAnn Fabrics.

Lightning Fast Waterproof Picnic Blanket

Supplies:

  •  vinyl tablecloth (shown here Summer Inspirations 52″ x 52″ Vinyl with flannel backing)
  •  corresponding fabric as big as the tablecloth ( shown here 54 x 54 ) (This could be a GREAT stash buster!)
  • thread

Tools:

  • scissors
  • sewing machine

Directions:
Piece together your fabric to make a square big enough to cover the tablecloth. Most of the bright fun fabric is 45″ wide and that includes the selvedges. Taking seam allowances into account, you will need a strip 54″ x 11″ to add to any new fresh-off-the-bolt fabric you are using.
Press your square.
Pin it to the table cloth RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER. Sew around 4 corners and 3 sides, leaving the middle of one side open. Trim the corners off the fabric. (if the table cloth had rounded corners like mine did.)

Turn the case right sides out, fold down the seam allowances on the open part, and top stitch that closed.

Voila!

Now, run it over to school and get it into the raffle package for Room 9.
Happy start of summer to you all!
