So, for Iron Craft this week we challenged the crafters to try something new, perhaps something they’ve been afraid to try in the past. I decided to tackle something I’ve wanted to learn for a long time but have never been able to get the hang of, crochet. Now, I didn’t think I was going to be crocheting up anything much my first time out, but my goal was to at least make a granny square.
First I had to learn how to hold the yarn and hook correctly. I have to say it’s tricky to retrain my knitter’s hand to turn into crocheters. I got the idea of it, but had to keep rearranging things which made for slow going. After a few misstarts, I finally made it through rows or single crochet and then double crochet!
Check out that sample piece. Aren’t you just amazed?! Ok, apparently that was all I needed to know to do a granny square, so I dived in. Alright that wasn’t all I needed to know…quick look bac through my book to figure out what a slip stitch is and I was off.
And there she is, my first granny square. Impressive, huh? There is one mistake, but I caught on to what I was doing wrong on the second round. I wanted to try another one, this time with two colors, but my left hand was so cramped up from holding the yarn I had to give it up for the day.
So, I think I have the hang of the basics anyway. I need to see if I can find a fun beginners project, so I don’t lose what I learned right away. Anyone have any good ideas?
